Bless the LORD, O My Soul: Adam Guillory

The following homily was shared at our Sunday Evening Eucharist Service 7/27/25.

Bless the LORD, O my soul, for He is kind to sinners like me. For He listens to me though I am but dust and ashes, and He sees me from His high places. His right hand saves me, and His left guides me. Bless the LORD, O my soul. He teaches me to pray, and He commands what I ought to say. Through His power, He gives those He loves persistence and perseverance, that they may obtain His Holy Spirit, and find His joy in desolate places. Bless the LORD, O my soul.

Through His guidance, I seek His provision. Through His providence, I knock at His door. Because I know that through no other means can I be saved. Though I am walking through the valley of the shadow of death, though the arsenals of hell fire against me and the ones I love, they will never sustain their assault. For the One True King is fighting on my behalf. In forms visible and invisible, the God of my ancestors fights for me, so for that I must say, Bless the LORD, O my soul.

He spares my entire body of sin, for the sake of the good which He has placed within me. He spares His righteous judgement of my flesh for the sake of the spirit. He saves me from the deepest pits, so I can praise His Holy Name, though all praise in the world is His. He has left His flock of angels and saints to seek after me, full of wickedness, to transform me into one of His own.

Though I deny Him, though I struggle and fight against Him, He gives me Himself. Though I am among the crowd that crucifies Him, He looks down upon me with pity and love. Though I am a broken vessel, He fills me with His Holy Spirit, that when It spills out, other broken vessels may strive to catch It.

Bless the LORD, O my soul. For He gives us our daily bread at this table, He forgives us our debts, so we may forgive our debtors. He does not subject us to temptation, but to His own yoke of love and mercy. He preserves me, and He has built up His strength within me. For that, I will continue to say, Bless the LORD, O my soul. Amen.
